The Ruminating
Whether you waited too long, or not long enough, wondering what they were thinking.
The Guilt
Not just how everything unfolded, but for the first time you smile again. Or forget they’re gone.
THE FEAR
What it was like to hold them, the smell of their breath, every little thing.
the Judgment
It’s been a week. Then a month. Then 3 more. And you think, “shouldn’t it feel easier by now?”
The loneliness
“Just get another dog.” People mean well, but they have no idea how special your bond was.
The Anticipation
You’re already grieving your best friend while they’re curled up beside you.
You don’t have to choose between missing them and living your life. There are ways to tend to your pain, carry them with you, and live life fully in their honor.
When you’re ready. And at your own pace.
I’m Paige — a therapist, writer, and bereaved pet parent.
I never planned to work in pet loss. But after Squiggles died, I wrote about the stages of grief after losing a pet — mostly to make sense of it myself.
Then the messages started pouring in. From strangers. “This is exactly what I’m going through. I thought I was the only one.” And they’re still arriving.
So once I’d done my own grieving, I knew I had to bring this — this soul-creature kind of loss — into the work I do.
So I created a place to turn to when you can no longer turn to them. It started as a community, The Furever Forest Circle, and has expanded to provide educational resources, journaling, one-on-one coaching, and more.
The Furever Forest can’t replace the comfort they gave you — nothing will. But it’s somewhere you can grieve as long and as deeply as you need, find some hope that it gets easier, and celebrate the special bond you had, furever.
Believe it or not, from a real forest!
Before Squiggles died — while she was still here, and I was already grieving her — I spent a day in the Amsterdamse Bos Forest.
Being immersed in it had me in awe of life and death and the interconnectedness of all beings.
I felt in my bones that when Squiggles’ body eventually transitioned, she wasn’t going to be gone. She’d return to the forest. Be in the sky. The air between the trees. And in me. She’d be everywhere.
It didn’t make the grief smaller. But it did change how I carried it.
That forest became a huge part of how I was able to cope with her death. It inspired my book, It’s All the Same Forest, my work as a therapist, and then this place.
The pain of losing them deserves to be taken seriously. They deserve to be honored, and you deserve to live fully, even after they’re gone.
